Narrative
When the sun set, one of the world’s most extraordinary private gardens disappeared into darkness. Our mission was not simply to illuminate six acres of landscape, architecture, and art, but to restore an experience the homeowners could enjoy every night.
By day, the landscape comes alive through the sound of the river, birds, and wind moving through the trees. Our design sought to create a nighttime experience worthy of that same beauty, using light and shadow to reveal the property’s unique character while reflecting how the homeowners actually lived and enjoyed each space.
With more than 1,300 fixtures installed over multiple phases, every decision had to remain cohesive across the entire estate. Repeated nighttime aiming sessions refined the balance of light/ shadow, visual hierarchy, and rhythm, allowing each garden to express its own purpose while remaining part of a unified composition.
Rather than illuminating everything equally, we established clear focal points and preserved darkness as an intentional design element. The most difficult decisions were not where to place light, but where to preserve darkness.
The measure of success was never the scale of the installation, but hearing the homeowners describe spending evenings outdoors in places they had once abandoned at sunset. The landscape did not become something different—it simply became complete.
Six acres of meticulously kept gardens, rare plantings, significant sculpture, and a river along the back border. By day, the grounds compose their own symphony: water over rock, birdsong, wind in the trees. At night, before our work, all of it disappeared.
