For more than two decades, Chris Apfelstadt has been fascinated by what happens to a place after the sun goes down. That fascination has shaped a career devoted to understanding how light can change not only what we see, but how we experience a place. Christopher A. Lighting Design brings that experience together in a studio founded on a simple belief: great lighting begins with understanding the story of a place.
The studio's projects span residential estates and architectural environments (domestically and globally), each responding to the conditions of the site rather than a fixed signature. The work emphasizes balance, hierarchy, and durability, with attention to how spaces evolve through the evening and across seasons.

Chris's designs have earned Best in Show honors at the AOLP International Lighting Design Competition three years running—a first in the association's history. His work is also featured in the book Masters of Landscape Lighting. He serves as Board Vice President of the Association of Outdoor Lighting Professionals and is a frequent speaker and mentor in the field. Chris works closely with architects, landscape architects, and builders who believe light should be considered from the first drawing, not as an afterthought.

The goal of each project is not simply visibility, but atmosphere, creating environments that feel intuitive, quiet, and deeply connected to the architecture and landscape surrounding them.
